Studio Series Gnaw (2021)

Studio Series Gnaw package artAs has been mentioned a couple of times already in this series, several Transformers characters that first appeared in The Transformers: The Movie did not align with either the Autobots or the Decepticons (although they have often been sold as such for ease of merchandising). Gnaw takes this a step further, in that he often doesn't even have his own name! Instead, The Transformers: The Movie depicts countless hordes of identical creatures called "Sharkticons." Gnaw is simply the name given to one of these minions for the sake of maintaining the standard packaging, which at the time of this character's original figure back in 1986, included both a standard space for the faction (Sharkticon) and a "name" space that would have been visibly empty if no individual character name existed to put there.

Sharkticon Beast ModeThe Sharkticons are probably the most well-known of the minions of the Quintessons, who I mentioned when discussing the Quintesson Trooper toy. The Quintessons were left fairly mysterious in the movie, but came to take on greater importance in the franchise as it evolved later. While there were several different kinds of beings depicted alongside the Quintessons, the Sharkticons are best-known if only for their sheer numbers (and, arguably, because they were the only Quintesson-aligned characters to actually be given a toy in the 1980s). Sharkticons are easily destroyed in isolation, but relentless and seemingly unstoppable when they all attack together. Fight them if you have to, but you're better off just getting out of their way!

Sharkticon Robot ModeBy the time this toy was released in 2021 (specifically for the then-35th anniversary of the movie), there had already been several Sharkticon-type toys released, but this toy, released as part of the Studio Series, was actually the first not to be labeled as a Decepticon, instead being packaged with a symbol designed to represent the Quintessons. It is also specifically called "Gnaw," in common with most (but by no means all) previous Sharkticon toys, but while some fiction has been created over the years to make one specific Sharkticon named "Gnaw" a distinct entity, this is the exception rather than the rule, and you really should feel free to consider this as a potential troop building figure. It's even been rereleased (in 2024), albeit in slightly different packaging, so it's fairly easy to find, although you might prefer to use one of the smaller Sharkticon molds for the purpose, since $20 each (or higher!) can add up to a large amount pretty quickly!
