Pictures for upcoming Transformers movie robots revealed

OK. This one definitely falls into the "do I really want to talk about this?" category. The pictures seem to be unofficial, but confirmed by the producers of the upcoming Transformers movie as legitimate. They can be found on TFW2005, which I'm told is now requiring browsers to register with their site. If you're up for it, it's free.

I don't really want to get into a huge bitch-fest over these. I'm fully aware that the characters here are not, and should not be, the same as the ones I knew from 20 years ago. I'm perfectly cool with that. Still, I hate these designs. They look overdone to me, and more than a little "skeletal." Perhaps the powers-that-be wanted to highlight the robotic nature of these characters.

It should also be noted that these all represent, to some degree or another, works in progress. Still, I don't expect significant changes to be made at this point. What we see here is a clear indication of the basic design intention the movie producers are using. I just wish I could say that I agreed with them more.

  1. I absolutely loathe, LOATHE them. I understand moderning characters or changing them a bit to better suit a live-action movie, but to completely reinvent them to the point that they're unrecognizable -- such as Starscream -- is a slap in the face to fandom, as is Don Murphy's command that the "negative ninnies" just shut up until the movie premieres.

They look like Bionicle, not Transformers. These robots could have been from any recent run-of-the-mill sci-fi movie. I thought I might be a little put off when I saw the designs for the first time, but I honestly didn't expect to have such a negative reaction to them.

And the producers' assurances to us fans that this would be the end all, be all Transformers movie we wanted looks now like just a smokescreen to calm the water until the hurricane-sized backlash begins. Now we know why the secrecy -- they'd have been lynched at SDCC!

Just my opinion, of course, but I have have zero anticipation for this movie and that's the most disappointing thing of all.

Boy, and the fans were upset when Materpiece Starscream had a bit too much blue? Whoo boy -- they had NO idea how badly he was to be mangled in his next incarnation!

  2. Wow. Somehow my "anti-Megatron rant" got frontpaged on Seibertron.com and I've scored, liked, 72 comments in a few hours!

    C'mon in, B-W -- the water's boiling! ;)
